12 DOF hexapod kit now sold by SparkFun

The 12 DOF hexapod kit from DAGU is one of the simplest hexapod kits ever!

Quick and easy to assemble, the body only consist of 12 leg segments, 12 foam rubber feet, 12 servos and a base plate with a hole pattern that allows controllers and sensors to be easily mounted.

What does it do?

I hope it will be able to walk around.

This my version of a small hexapod with micro 9G servos. I'm using 2 DOF legs, that way I' need to control 12 servos. They are all controlled by an ATmega328. The board I'm using is my own design. I've named it the Bajduino 3A, it has an ATmega328P-PU and a LM2576 switch mode voltage regulator. The regulator should be good for 3A. Power comes from a 2S Lipo battery. I drew up some pieces in Autocad and had them laser cut by a local company. Not cheap but I prefer it this way, I'm not a mechanical man. I prefer to design things on a pc and let others make it.

What does it do?

Navigates around the room detecting obstacles and avoiding them.

I got this book for my Kindle over amazon Insectronics: Build Your Own Walking Robot and decided for this to be my first robot project. As i have been dealing with arduino for some time now but mostly building advanced outdoor sensor networks using long range RF. The book has it all from cutting the parts to programming the PIC they used to control the robot. I made a arduino version since i have a lot of arduinos at home.

Future addons:

- Use a arduino nano with a homemade servo shield to downsize the electronics

Hexy the Hexapod: Available at Maker Faire New York

Hexy is a robotic hexapod kit from Arcbotics. It’s a cute, cheap, easy and fun intro to advanced robots. It’s Arduino compatible, and 100% Open Hardware/Software.

Unless you were one of the over-500 Kickstarter backers who supported Hexy at $175 or higher, a Hexy kit is going to be hard to come by. But you’ve got another shot at it: we’ll have a number of Hexy kits for sale. $250 gets you:

  • Everything needed to build the kit, including the screwdriver.
  • Ultrasonic distance sensor eyes.
  • Acrylic laser-cut pieces in your choice of several colors, with extra pieces.
  • 20 Servos (18 for legs, 1 for eyes, 1 extra).
  • Full Arduino-compatible Servotor32 robot controller capable of controlling up to 32 Servos.
  • All the screws and nuts you need to assemble the kit, with extras.
  • A serial-bluetooth adapter that plugs straight into the Servotor32 robot controller.

On top of that, the makers, Arcbotics, will be on hand as well. Look for Arcbotics and Hexy in the smaller of the two Maker Sheds (the one embedded in the Arduino pavilion).

Hexy: hands-on with the adorable, affordable hexapod (video)

The Artisan's Asylum has a few guiding principles, one of which is anyone can "make." We assume one of the others is "you can never have too many hexapods." If Stompy, the giant rideable bot, is a bit much for you to handle (or store), then maybe Hexy is more your speed. He's got six legs and 20 servos, but at only $200, he's much cheaper than similar hexapod kits and, most importantly, more adorable. The bot is the brain child of Joseph Schlesinger, a resident at the Somerville hacker space who saw a need for a low-cost but serious robotics kit. Since hitting Kickstarter in May, his creation has raked in roughly $86,000 in pledges, far surpassing his original goal of thirteen grand. We swung by Joe's booth to get a taste of what exactly his hundreds of backers have bought into and to find out what's next for the budding bot entrepreneur.
