HeatSynch Labs Hosts Arduino Hackathon

Phoenix's HeatSynch Labs will host HackPHX Arduino, an all-day and all-night Arduino hackathon tomorrow, Feb. 2, from 10am-10:15pm. Here's how it will go down: In a ode to Iron Chef, 50 participants will be split into 10 teams for 12 hours to create something awesome from an Arduino, a "secret ingredient," and the hackerspace's resources. The teams will compete for more than $4,000 in prizes and giveaways. Expect music, robots, interactive light, wearable electronics, and more. Tickets are sold out but the the event will be live streamed

Interview with Pinoccio Co-Founder Eric Jennings

Eric Weddington, marketing manager for open source and communities at Atmel, posted an in-depth interview with Pinoccio's Eric Jennings. Pinnoccio is a new, open source hardware company. Their first product is a microcontroller board aimed at creating “a complete ecosystem" for the internet of things. Pinoccio calls their board an "Arduino Mega with wings." It's Raspberry Pi-friendly, too.

Natalia Buckley is a hacker, designer, and creative technologist. She's originally from Poland and now live in Brighton on England's south coast, a city famed for its appetite for experimentation. "I'm just making speculative things, that don't necessarily fully exist in the real world, but help us learn something," she says. "I'm a social observer. The sole reason I make things is to learn something about other people. Because I find other people fascinating. My work in technology is basically about people. People constantly interact with technology and I can make technology to watch them do stuff!"

He performs on the sidewalks of New York City with with nothing but the power of his voice and a bag full of tricks that looks like old timey, slapstick gags — epaulets that unexpectedly pop up in the air, banners that "accidentally" fall behind him, and spinning ribbons on his lapel.

use mains AC as a switch for arduino?

hey gang, does anyone know if it's possible to use mains AC as a switch for the 'duino?

A little background:

Calculon is working on a project that he hopes will take advantage of his doorbell's AC power. He wants the old-school analog doorbell switch to activate a function on his arduino instead of firing off a solenoid in the door chime. Is this possible with some sort of voltage divider? He doesn't need to measure the current, voltage, phase, or anything liek that, he just needs to sense on/off like a pushbutton. He assumes the initial doorbell voltage will be 120V.

Network Enabled ShapeOko CNC Uses Raspberry Pi and Alamode

Kevin Osborn was tired of worrying about getting dust from his ShapeOko CNC mill into his computer. Using a Raspberry Pi and an AlaMode shield he can now send G-Code to the machine over his wireless network, leaving his computer clean and available for other tasks. According to Kevin, "this is of the simplest and most rewarding applications of AlaMode."

Hi.

Has anyone tried using These LCDs with an arduino? I'm not sure whether they're HDD44780 compatible or not, and I can't seem to find much of a datasheet.
