It’s going to be a great weekend in London in mid January. Massimo Banzi, Arduino co-founder will be at the Somerset House in London for three days. The program starts with a talk followed by a Q&A, on Friday January 16th in the Screening Room, South Wing at Somerset House. (book your ticket here)

On Saturday 17th, and Sunday January 18th you can take part to two 8 hours sessions that will be held at Makerversity, in the New Wing of Somerset House. The workshop is suitable for beginners, designers, teachers, artists, hackers, and everyone interested in Arduino (no prerequisites needed). At the end of the two sessions each participant will be able to prototype autonomously a simple project with Arduino. The participation is available for a max of 20 people: you can check details and book your ticket here. The presentation taking place on Friday is free for workshop participants.

Tekniska Museum of Stockholm in collaboration with Italian Embassy, and the Royal Institute of Technology  (KTH), will host a special edition of the Arduino Day on the 26th of November.

Massimo Banzi and David Cuartielles together with professors from KTH and some of the most creative professionals, students and enthusiasts, will be the protagonists of a showcase of inspirational lectures and Pop Up speeches suitable for both hardcore Arduino fans as well as for the curious newbie.

Right before the weekend of  World Maker Faire in NYC, Massimo Banzi will be at MakerCon with a keynote taking place on September 18 at 11 a.m local time. Makercon is a 2-day conference by and for makers organized around 4 specific tracks: Business of Making, Education, Maker Community Building, Tools of Innovation&Technology.

Makercon connects individuals at the forefront of the maker movement, focusing on the technologies, services ecosystem, manufacturing models, and funding trends that provide new ways of making things and getting them to market.

On Wednesday, September 17 at 7:30pm (after the Innovation Showcase) MakerCon will be able to watch the exclusive New York premiere screening of the acclaimed Neflix documentary Print the Legend. Right after the film, Dale Dougherty is moderating a panel discussion with some of the key players from the film.

Maker Camp is a free summer camp from Make and Google for building, tinkering and exploring.
Back in July Massimo was invited for a live streaming interview to talk about Arduino (starting at 11’20”) together with Ayah Bdeir , founder of the littleBits electronic components. Enjoy the video!

The Sensing Umbrella is the second project I’m featuring on this blog (see the first), coming out of the class at  the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design called Connected Objects, with Massimo Banzi and Giorgio Olivero. 

The project created by a team of students Akarsh Sanghi, Saurabh Datta and Simon Herzog is a platform to gather, display, and share hyperlocal air pollution data:

Each umbrella serves as a node for measuring CO and NO2 pollution levels and can provide exceptionally granular data to pollution databases and for scientific analysis. Simultaneously, the light visualisations inside the umbrella respond to pollution levels in real time and spread awareness of air quality in the city for its inhabitants. The umbrella uses open hardware and software to gather and interpret data through a built-in sensor array, displays CO and NO2 pollution locally in two modes, and logs the timestamped and geolocated data to the cloud for analysis.

Riccardo Luna, co-curator of Maker Faire Rome has just revealed the first list of speakers confirming their presence next October! You have some more days to submit your project, deadline extended until 15th of June.

Today, together with Massimo Banzi, we have some important news to share with you. There are big novelties at the second annual European Maker Faire in Rome (actually, there will be many more within the next few days as you will see…).

The first one is the list of speakers for the opening conference on October 2. It is not complete, other names will be added, but already we can say: it is an incredible list.

We are delighted to announce the presence of, among others, Cory Doctorow, who, here, on this blog, does not even need to be introduced; artist Neil Harbisson; scientist Ellen Jorgensen, who will discuss genetic hacking; the very young Joey Hudy will be back and, this time, Super-Awesome Sylvia will also come; and the Dutch robot music band TeamDARE.

We have given particular attention to the 3D printer sector and its medical applications: therefore, scientists will be the protagonists of great allenges like printing ears, lungs or hearts in 3D.

There are many names and you will see them on this site, but first let me publicly thank the European Space Agency for honoring us with the last public appearance before a six month space mission of astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti: I know Samantha well, I know what she is worth and I am fascinated by her curiosity about the world of makers; I heard her planning a mission taking maker tools into space and the idea of Arduino among the stars is fascinating.

So, we have the names. Now, where will they all be? This is the second novelty: we will leave the Palazzo dei congressi and, instead, meet at the Parco della Musica designed by Renzo Piano. Not only is it the most beautiful structure for events in Rome, it is a real park where we intend to build a Makers Village comparable to those that exist in San Mateo and New York.

We are not exaggerating, the space is beautiful and there is room for everyone: exhibitions, workshops, areas for babies and children, an area for parties. Asset Camera, as you know, is producing Maker Faire Rome for the second time, and after the huge success of last year is offering us a container where the only limit will be our imagination.

Now we are waiting for your projects. And we are certain they will be worthy of an event that will occur in the middle of the semester when Europe is headed by Italy, which will therefore make it a great celebration of European innovators (but we will still also have African and Chinese makers and fablabs).

And, for this reason we have decided to extend the deadline of the Call 4Makers. There’s still time, a few extra days have been added (until June 15). And a beautiful place awaits you. Not just to have fun, but to truly take part in the third industrial revolution.
