HP's latest Envy desktop PC comes with 12th-gen Intel chips and RTX 3080 Ti graphics

HP has unveiled its latest Envy desktop PC. Instead of an all-in-one like many of the company’s past Envy-branded workstations, it adopts a traditional form factor. The design and brushed aluminum exterior make the case reminiscent of boutique ITX enclosures like the Dan C4. On the top, you’ll find three USB-A ports, a USB-C connection, an SD card slot and a headphone jack. The Envy Desktop PC features a one-touch tool-less design HP says makes it easy to upgrade the internal components.

You can configure it with the latest 12th-generation processors from Intel, including the 125-watt Core i9-12900K. HP will offer both NVIDIA and AMD GPUs, with the RTX 3080 Ti and RX 6700 XT as the top-end options from each company. As for RAM and storage, the choices you have there are to add up to 128GB of DDR4 memory and a combination of NVMe SSDs and mechanical drives.

HP

HP announced two ultrawide monitors alongside its new PC. The first of those is the 40-inch Z40c G3. It features a factory-calibrated ISP panel with a 5,120 x 2,160 resolution, 98 percent DCI-P3 wide color gamut coverage and a 1000:1 static contrast ratio. In what’s been a trend at CES 2022, the Z40c G3 features a built-in 4K web camera that supports Windows Hello authentication. On the back of the monitor, you’ll find two Thunderbolt 3 ports that can provide up to 100W of power delivery to your devices. It also comes with four USB-A ports, an ethernet jack and HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 connections.

For those looking for a slightly smaller ultrawide monitor, HP will also offer the Z34c G3. It’s a 34-inch display with a 3,440 x 1,440 IPS panel that features 85 percent DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, a 1000:1 contrast ratio and a peak brightness of 350 nits. It too comes with a built-in web camera. In this case, it’s a 5-megapixel one, though it still supports Windows Hello. As for ports, the Z34c G3 comes with a similar selection of connections as its more expensive stablemate, the only difference being that it features a single Thunderbolt 3 port.

HP

The Z40c G3 and Z34c G3 will cost $1,500 and $949 respectively when they become available sometime later this month. HP will release the Envy Desktop sometime in the spring, at which point it will be sold through the company’s website, as well as Amazon and Costco.

HyperX boasts 300 hours of battery life for its latest gaming headset

If you use a wireless headset for gaming, there’s a good chance you’ve had its battery die on you at the worst possible time. While its latest peripheral won’t stop that from happening altogether, HyperX does hope it will make it a much less frequent occurrence. At CES 2022, the company, which was recently acquired by HP, announced the Cloud Alpha Wireless.

It’s a headset that features up to 300 hours of battery life on a single charge. That means you can get almost a full two weeks of continuous use before they need recharging. The headset also comes with new 50mm drivers that are slimmer and lighter than the ones you’ll find on the Cloud Alpha’s wired predecessor but deliver the same audio performance. Other features include a detachable noise-canceling mic, support for DTS’s Headphone: X technology and onboard controls you’ll find on the earcup.

HyperX

HyperX announced a handful of other peripherals. Some of the highlights include the Clutch wireless controller and Plusefire Haste wireless mouse. The former is an Xbox-style Android and PC gamepad that connects to your device over a Bluetooth 4.2, 2.4Ghz or wired connection. Battery life comes in at 19 hours on a single charge and the controller ships with an adjustable clip that can expand from 41 millimeters to 86 millimeters, so it should be able to hold most phones without issue.

The Pulsefire Haste, meanwhile, has a lot in common with the Aerox 3 mice from SteelSeries. It’s a wireless mouse with a perforated honeycomb design that’s protected against spills by an IP55 rating. HyperX says you can get 100 hours on a single charge from the device and the switches are rated for up to 80 million clicks. A nice touch here is that it will come with an extra set of skates for when the original ones wear out.

HyperX

Provided the pandemic doesn’t delay shipments, the Cloud Alpha Wireless will go on sale in February for $200. As for the Clutch controller and Pulse Haste mouse, they’re due in March and February for $50 and $80, respectively.

Dell put a 4K webcam in its new 4K video conferencing monitor

With the pandemic now almost in its third year, it’s fair to say video calling won’t become a smaller part of our lives anytime soon. So it’s surprising we haven’t seen more monitors like the new U3223QZ from Dell. It has a webcam built directly into its frame. And judging by the spec sheet the company shared, it’s a pretty good one too.

It features a Stravis CMOS sensor from Sony that can capture 4K HDR video at 30 frames per second or 1080p footage at 60 frames per second. It also features an adjustable field of view you can switch between 65, 78 or 90 degrees depending on how much your environment you want your contacts to see. The camera automatically closes its shutter when you don’t have a video conferencing app open. On the front, there’s also a toggle to disable it entirely. But best of all, the webcam works seamlessly with Windows Hello, so no need to type in your PIN each time you want to unlock your PC.

Dell

As for the display itself, it’s a 31.5-inch 4K IPS panel that is DisplayHDR 400 certified and covers 98 percent of the DCI-P3 color gamut. Dell claims the U3223QZ is the first monitor in its class to feature IPS Black technology. As a result, it has a 2,000:1 contrast ratio. For context, most IPS panels have contrast ratios of 1000:1, so they don’t display blacks as deeply as VA panels and OLEDs do.

As with most Dell monitors, the U3223QZ comes with plenty of ports. You’ll find Display Port 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 connections, as well as five USB-A ports capable of 10Gbps data transfers. If you need to power other devices, there’s one USB-C port capable of 90W PD and another capable of 15W PD. What you won’t find here is an HDMI 2.1 connection. If it wasn’t already clear, this is not a monitor Dell designed for gaming. So don’t expect FreeSync support or a faster than 60Hz refresh rate.

Dell will begin selling the U3223QZ on March 29th. The company said it would share pricing information closer to release.

Razer’s Blade gaming laptops get 12th-gen Intel CPUs and RTX 3080 Ti graphics

It wouldn't be CES without a deluge of new gaming laptops, and so far, the 2022 edition of the annual trade show has delivered. It should come as no surprise then that Razer took the opportunity to update its popular Blade 14, 15 and 17 models. The company hasn't redesigned the three laptops, but it has made a handful of tweaks. They all feature refreshed keyboards with "slightly larger" keys, a change Razer says it made with the "wellness" of users in mind. They also include a new hinge design that is thinner and enables better ventilation.

Razer

However, the highlight of these machines is their updated internals. All three will come standard with DDR5 RAM for the first time. It's also possible to configure them with NVIDIA's latest laptop flagship GPU, the RTX 3080 Ti. With 16GB of onboard GDDR6 memory, Razer claims it delivers better performance than a desktop Titan RTX. Another option you'll have is the RTX 3070 Ti. Razer says the GPU is up to 70 percent faster than the RTX 2070 Super NVIDIA shipped in 2020. The company also claims it can deliver 100 frames per second while rendering games at 1440p.

The Blade 15 and 17 will also come with Intel's new 12th-generation Core H-series processors. Announced at CES, these use the same performance and efficient core design as their recently announced desktop counterparts. Those with money to spare can configure the Blade 15 and Blade 17 with the 14-core i9-12900H. Oh, and all the computers will come with Windows 11 pre-installed.

As you might imagine, the Blade 14 features the fewest improvements as the most recent addition to Razer's lineup. The 2022 model includes a new fingerprint-resistant coating and a 1080p IR webcam with full Windows Hello support. Internally, the computer has one of AMD's latest 6000 series processors, the Ryzen 9 6900HX, paired with 16GB of DDR5 RAM.

As for the Blade 15, it will come with a new optional UHD display. The highlights of this IPS panel include 100 percent DCI-P3 wide color gamut coverage and a 144Hz refresh rate, up from 60Hz on the 4K OLED Razer offered previously. Your other display options with the 2022 model are a 360Hz 1080p panel or a 240Hz 1440p screen.

Razer

Lastly, the Blade 17 gets some of the most practical upgrades. Razer has equipped its flagship with a higher capacity 82WHr battery. It also comes with eight speakers, up from four on the 2021 model. Last but not least, the Blade 17 will ship with a new 280W adapter that, thanks to its GaN circuitry, is about the size of a 180W power brick.

The Blade 14 will start at $2,000 when pre-orders open on February 10th through the Razer website and select retailers, with broader availability to follow later in the first quarter of 2022. Meanwhile, the Blade 15 and Blade 17 will start at $2,500 and $2,700, respectively, and will be available to pre-order beginning on January 25th.

Masonite's M-Pwr smart door comes with a built-in Ring doorbell and Yale smart lock

There’s no shortage of smart locks and doorbells you can buy to modernize the entrance to your home, but a complete door that integrates both those devices into its frame is something we haven’t seen. Enter the M-Pwr smart door from Masonite. Made from fiberglass, it features a Ring Video Doorbell and Yale smart lock.

It connects to your home’s WiFi network and electrical system using a “patent-pending” technology that powers all the components so that you don’t need individual batteries for each one. It also includes an emergency battery system Masonite claims can power the smart lock, doorbell and LED lighting for 24 hours in case of a power failure. Naturally, no smart home product is complete without an accompanying app. In the M-Pwr’s case, Masonite’s software allows you to program the built-in welcome lights and confirm whether the door is open or closed.

At the moment, Masonite is only offering its M-Pwr smart doors through a single home builder in Charlotte, North Carolina. While the company plans to partner with additional builders over the next year, it hasn’t said anything about selling the doors to people who want to remodel their homes.

Skydio's budget-friendly drone gets a battery and range boost

In a few short years, US drone maker Skydio has gone from relative unknown to a legitimate DJI competitor. In 2019, the company took a big step forward with its Skydio 2, releasing a UAV that had one of the best obstacle avoidance systems we had seen up to that point. With CES 2022 underway, it’s back with an updated model of that drone called the Skydio 2 Plus that adds both hardware and software enhancements.

The new model features two additional antennas compared to the Skydio 2, allowing you to fly it up to 6 kilometers away in any one direction. By contrast, its predecessor had a range of 3.5 kilometers. Additionally, Skydio claims an improvement in battery life extends the new model’s flying time by 20 percent. The company has also updated its Beacon remote to extend its range to 3 kilometers.

Alongside the Plus model, Skydio introduced KeyFrame, an AI-powered feature the company says will allow “anyone” to “design impossible camera motion that is smooth, precise and repeatable.” As the name suggests, you select a handful of keyframes you want the drone to capture, the software then links them together in one continuous motion. Compared to DJI, Skydio hasn’t had the most expansive or robust set of camera modes, so the addition of KeyFrame is an important one for the company.

The Skydio 2 Plus is available today starting at $1099. The KeyFrame feature is also available today on both Skydio 2 and 2 Plus drones.

LG's C2 OLED TV line will include its brighter 'evo' panels in 2022

As is something of an annual tradition for the company, LG is using CES as a venue to share the first details on its 2022 TV lineup. Much like last year, the company is touting improved brightness as one of the main reasons to buy its 2022 sets. That's because this year LG's more affordable C2 lineup will also include the "evo" panel technology the company debuted in 2021. Additionally, LG claims its new Alpha 9 Gen 5 AI processors will help further increase luminance through a smarter algorithm and better heat dissipation. Those chips will also improve upscaling performance and offer virtual 7.1.2 surround sound up-mixing, according to LG.

The new OLEDs will ship with the latest version of LG’s webOS operating system. The updated software adds support for individual profiles, allowing you to customize the menu for quick access to your favorite streaming services. By creating a profile, you’ll also get personalized content recommendations and notifications related to your favorite sports teams.

LG

Another new webOS feature allows you to mirror what you’re watching to a second LG TV. In that way, the company says you watch cable and satellite content on two television sets without an extra set-top box. It’s hard to say how useful that feature will prove since if you have more than one TV in your home, there’s a good chance it’s because your family can’t agree on what to watch in the first place.

Out of the box, LG’s 2022 TV lineup will support the smart home industry’s new Matter standard, allowing you to control devices lights and thermostats from the TVs. LG also promises a better gaming experience thanks to its updated Game Optimizer. The company is adding additional feature and preset toggles to the menu to make it easier to access those when you need them. As before, all G2 and C2 sets will support G-Sync, FreeSync and variable refresh rates. HDMI 2.1 also comes standard across the lineup.

LG has yet to share pricing, but what we do is that the G2 series will consist of 55-, 65- 75-inch models. The company will also offer two new 83- and 97-inch sets. The more affordable C2 series will consist of six models total, including a new 42-inch size LG says is a great fit for console and PC gaming. The rest of the C2 lineup consists of 48-, 55-, 65-, 77- and 83-inch sets. LG also plans to expand its QNED TV lineup for 2022. Those sets will include the company’s Quantum Dot NanoCell technology and offer 100 percent color volume.

Arlo's Security System has a keypad you can activate with a tap of your phone

Many security systems come with sensors you can attach to your home’s windows and doors to monitor for break-ins. One of the limitations of those devices is that they typically only include one monitoring function. In the long run, that’s something that can cost you extra money if you move and end up with too many of one sensor and not enough of another. Security camera maker Arlo may have an elegant solution for that problem.

At CES 2022, the company introduced a security system that includes an all-in-one multi-sensor with eight monitoring functions. It can detect motion (including door and window openings), water leaks, light and temperature changes, as well as sounds made by T3 and T4 smoke alarms. Each sensor is about an inch wide and connects to a modular hub that includes a backlit keypad and NFC connectivity so that you can use your phone to activate and disarm the system. The hub is also compatible with Arlo’s various security cameras and its Secure subscription service.

The Arlo Security System will go on sale sometime in the first half of 2022, according to a statement the company shared with The Verge. It promised to disclose more information, including details on pricing, closer to release. The company didn’t have anything to say about the Security System’s smart home integrations today, but it did announce that it will support the Matter standard moving forward. At its simplest, the promise of Matter is that you’ll be able to buy a device and use it with the voice assistant of your choice and easily connect it to your existing home network.

EVs made up 65 percent of car sales in Norway last year

Electric vehicles accounted for nearly two-thirds of all new car sales in Norway this past year, according to newly published data from the country’s Road Federation. In 2021, Norwegian dealerships sold 176,276 cars, 65 percent of which were EVs. That’s an 11 percentage point increase from the year prior when they accounted for 54 percent of all new car sales.

The Tesla Model 3 was the most popular choice among new buyers followed by Toyota’s hybrid RAV4, the only car with an internal combustion engine to make the country’s top-ten best-selling list. Other notable cars to make the list include the Volkswagen ID.4 in third place and the Polestar 2 in the number 10 spot.

The Norwegian EV Association told Reuters electric vehicle sales could make up as much as 80 percent of the country’s total car market by 2022 — as long as chip shortages don’t cause further shipping delays. As in 2020, much of what’s driving EV adoption in Norway is the country’s generous subsidies. Car buyers don’t have to pay taxes imposed on traditional internal combustion engine vehicles when they buy an EV. In 2021, the country’s federal government missed out on approximately $3.41 billion in tax revenue to push forward on its plan to end all gasoline-powered car sales by 2025.

T-Mobile and Verizon discontinue iPad rebate program that caused customer headaches

T-Mobile and Verizon have seemingly discontinued an iPad rebate program they offered in partnership with Apple. In a change spotted by MacRumors, the company’s website no longer lists a promotion that previously allowed customers to save up to $200 by activating a cellular iPad through either of the two carriers.

I had the same issue with the $200 rebate on the new iPad this spring. Verizon wouldn’t give it to me.

— Jordan Patterson (@JordanPatterson) November 18, 2021

The program and similar ones Apple offered for iPhone and Apple Watch purchases was the subject of a story Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman published in December. The article recounts the lengthy process he had to follow to claim a $100 rebate on an Apple Watch 7. His initial request was denied by T-Mobile, and it was only after “multiple hourlong” phones calls and an eventual escalation that the problem was resolved.

“While my difficulties were with T-Mobile, Verizon users have been reporting similar problems, particularly around iPad rebates,” Gurman wrote at the time. In fact, you’ll find several people recounting their own frustrations with the program in his Twitter mentions. In short, it seems T-Mobile and Verizon were denying some rebate requests without providing much of an explanation for their actions. The terms of the promotion were also presented in a way that made them seem much simpler than they were in practice.

However, it’s not clear if those complaints were what prompted Apple, T-Mobile and Verizon to discontinue the program. We’ve reached out to all three companies for comment. We'll update this article when we hear back from them.
