The Open Hardware Summit 2015 will be held September 19th in Philadelphia, PA (USA). This event brings together the open hardware community for a day of talks on all aspects of open-source hardware. It’s an inspiring event and a great chance to connect with other open hardware practitioners. The summit is organized by the Open Source Hardware Association.

If you’d like to speak at the Summit, check out the call for submissions. You have until July 2nd to submit your proposal. Decisions on the schedule will be made by July 31st.

Yes, we made it! You have some more days to complete your application for Maker Faire Rome – The European edition, and be with us next October. So far, we received many interesting, challenging, surprising projects and we don’t want to miss yours: defeat the procrastinator hiding in you and submit you project now!

Projects will be selected by a jury and will participate free of charge. If your project is accepted:

• you can exhibit your project: we’ll give you for free a booth with table and chairs inside the halls, which will be filled with visitors who are curious and interested in meeting you
• you can make a presentation in public: we’ll give you for free a room or a stage where you can talk about your project or tell your story or deal with the issues that you want to propose
• you can hold a workshop: we’ll give you for free a workshop area where you can do interactive demonstrations and engage participants -adults and / or children- in practical activities
• you can perform in public: we’ll give you for free a space or a stage  to perform in your
  creative, technological, robotic, musical, pyrotechnic performance.

Creative Technologies in the Classroom* gives us a lot of joy whenever we visit students’ fairs. Each iteration of CTC (Madrid, Castilla, Barcelona and so forth) has its own technology fair and it is meant to award and congregate students and their projects. Arduino Verkstad, teachers, school and government representatives join as well to celebrate and share what students have learned along the program.

This year is the third edition of CTC Castilla and the fair had 140 projects, 936 students and 70 teachers. We have noticed that:

• Teachers learned along with the students since they are not reproducing the CTC projects as the final projects, they have innovating by bringing new ideas
• We got told that teachers are forced by the students to open the labs late after school hours because they want to spend more time working on their projects
• Students have become pretty good at pitching projects, not only their production is excellent, but also their presentation skills

Some of the most impressive projects are:

A robotic hand controlled from a phone that even had an app with the sign language alphabet so that the hand would “talk” for you, and an R2D2 made of recycled materials. *Creative Technologies in the Classroom (CTC) is a collection of experiments aimed at transforming the way technology is taught in schools around the world. These experiments introduce basic concepts in programming, electronics, and mechanics.

On Saturday the 28th of March we planned to celebrate Arduino Day with our global community.
We are organizing 4 official events in Boston (USA) at MIT, in Torino (Italy) at Officine Arduino, in Malmo (Sweden) at Arduino Verkstad, in Budapest (Hungary) at Arduino Hungary,and in Bangalore (India) at Arduino Karkhana.

If you live near one of them you can come an visit us, otherwise you can organize one locally and invite experts or a newbies, engineers, designers, crafters and makers to give their contribution and share their experience with Arduino. Submissions for organizers are open until 15th of March!

Arduino Day is open to anyone who wants to celebrate Arduino and all the things that have been done (or can be done!) with it. The events will offer different types of activities, tailored to local audiences all over the world.

To organize an event during Arduino Day, go through the following steps:

• Find a location and plan your activities according to the resources you have available.
  Consider different ways of engaging your audience, such as talks, panel discussions, hands-on workshops, open days, and show-and-tell events. Most of the activities should be open to the public and free of charge (you can also run a workshop with a fee, but it should not be the only activity for the day).
• Fill out the online form and submit your proposal.
  The call for submissions closes on March 15th. You need to be logged in to submit your proposal.
• Once your event has been approved, a location pin will be added to the map on the Arduino Day website.
  This is just temporary though, you need to prepare an agenda of your event to get it confirmed. You will also receive a confirmation email with a link to download your Digital Kit, which includes: Official Arduino Day posters, Event flyer, Official signage system, graphics for Badges, and a 10% discount code for the Arduino Store.
• Publish the agenda of the event on an online page.
  Make sure the final agenda for the day is published online. You can create a blogpost, a Facebook event, a meetup, an Eventbrite page, or whatever online page you like. Only Community events with an online agenda will be confirmed.

On saturday 15th of November we are going to be in London  for the Elefant&Castle Mini Maker Faire at the London College of Communication. We’ll have a booth with some projects made with Arduino boards and  demos to test our new Arduino Zero. You can visit our booth located in The Street area of the First Floor (check the Map).

Massimo Banzi will be around as well in the afternoon and you can come and say hi to him at the booth starting from 3pm.

A week ago we were in London for an introductory workshop on the Arduino Yún. The participants were mainly beginners, knew the basics about Arduino and had the chance to learn about the Bridge library, how to control the board locally through the browser and to use Temboo to connect the plant to Twitter. Arduino history is tied to the city of London: the first Arduino workshops ever took place right there.

We are now planning to organise more #ArduinoTour activities in UK and we are looking for teachers and ambassadors of the Arduino community in London and also UK in general. Are you interested? Fill the form!

Next workshop in the City is scheduled on the 20th and 21st of December and it’s focused on beginners. On the 19th from 6 to 8 pm there will be a public presentation on the Arduino project and also get in touch with possible collaborators. Activity: 4 Kit Demos for Teachers & Schools

• Tickle Robot A regular ticklish robot in a rocking chair. Come to think of it, that doesn’t sound very regular at all. Tickle the robot on its heart and it will start wiggle like crazy.

• Open Box An open source box that contains open source electronics. Oh, and it automatically opens when you knock on it.

• Binary  LP This sort of works as an LP player. The difference is that instead of using a needle on a plastic disc, we use three IR sensors in a row to read a pattern from a paper disc. If you are both musically and digitally inclined, you will have lots of fun creating melodies with this.

• Drawdio You might think that this pen is magic, and it might just be. Drawdio turns (almost) everything that is conductive into an instrument. You can either make music by drawing a picture or by touching the tip of it to different conductive things around you.

Right before the weekend of  World Maker Faire in NYC, Massimo Banzi will be at MakerCon with a keynote taking place on September 18 at 11 a.m local time. Makercon is a 2-day conference by and for makers organized around 4 specific tracks: Business of Making, Education, Maker Community Building, Tools of Innovation&Technology.

Makercon connects individuals at the forefront of the maker movement, focusing on the technologies, services ecosystem, manufacturing models, and funding trends that provide new ways of making things and getting them to market.

On Wednesday, September 17 at 7:30pm (after the Innovation Showcase) MakerCon will be able to watch the exclusive New York premiere screening of the acclaimed Neflix documentary Print the Legend. Right after the film, Dale Dougherty is moderating a panel discussion with some of the key players from the film.
